Whether you realize it or not, you rely heavily on the function of your vehicle’s interior lights in order to go about driving. While your headlights, tail lights, side marker lamps, fog lamps and turn signals might get a lot of the glory for keeping you compliant with the law and enabling you to see, your interior lights go at least half as far.

Would you be able to read the speedometer or the other gauges on your dashboard if it were not for the function of interior lights? Would you be able to use your vanity in the dark or during adverse conditions? Would you be able to read a map or read a book while the car was parked and you were waiting for someone? The answer here is a clear and flat no.

It’s worse than this, though. What about being able to see what you were stepping into when you get out of the car? Would you be able to see the ground? How would you be able to know you weren’t going to end up an ankle deep in mud or water after opening the door? The short answer is you wouldn’t, and even though these are not necessarily “interior lights,” they’re usually classified with them.

Many automotive manufacturers equip their cars at the factory with incandescent bulbs, which is great for you because the car comes ready to “use” and bad for you because incandescent bulbs leave a lot to be desired. They burn hot, draw a lot of power, don’t last a long time and have spotty reliability. They can also be temperamental, going out with so much as a touch. The biggest headache to draw from that is that they don’t last a long time, which leaves you out in the dark.

So what can you, as a conscientious vehicle owner, do about the spotty reliability and poor performance of interior incandescent bulbs for your car? Well, for one thing, you can switch them all out with interior LED bulbs when you get the chance, or just wait for them to die and then replace them piecemeal. That choice is yours, but when you do switch over you’ll be more than glad that you did.

For one thing, interior LED bulbs for your car will last a lot longer than incandescent bulbs, and that’s no joke. It’s also not an exaggeration. Many incandescent bulbs will last a thousand hours or so at best. LED bulbs, by contrast, will last ten times more or longer. Some LED bulbs may even last up to 50,000 hours.

That all equates to fewer replacements that you need to make, but there’s also the fact that LED bulbs are more reliable than incandescent bulbs and they will draw less power as well. That makes them less taxing on your electrical system.

In addition, and perhaps best of all, some interior LED bulbs are plug and play. If you’ve never heard that term before, it means that you can simply pop out the old light bulb from your vehicle and then pop the new LED into the socket. You don’t need to do any wiring or make any alterations to your vehicle.
